SILVI – Don’t Wanna Love Again

Hi! How are you? It feels strange placing words down here again, I mean shit, the last time i posted was pre-pandemic.

It wasn’t a conscious decision, but I think it’s OK to admit I was a little burnt-out, and words were becoming harder and harder to find. On reflection, I think the time away has done me good. I’ve made some tiny changes to the site, and more importantly to myself.

I’ve missed sharing my musical discoveries with you. Scottish singer-songwriter SILVI is the kind of artist that draws you in from the get-go. Over the course of the past year, she’s headlined the iconic King Tuts in Glasgow, sold out Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh, and starred in a BBC iPlayer documentary about the grassroots music scene in West Lothian

More often than not, there’s a disconnect between what’s happening in local scenes and national success. Far too often good artists are being ignored by a London-centric industry. Especially in working-class areas, where they don’t have the financial support, or bank of mum and dad to stay afloat whilst they hone their craft and make the right connections.

There’s something to be said for the depth of ambition shown by SILVI on Don’t Wanna Love Again, which acts as a showcase for both her vulnerability and raw power (a wee belter of a voice) and whilst her tones might lead to comparisons to the fever dream pitch of Florence Welch, there’s brooding layers of tenderness reminiscent of Mazzy Star , whilst the cinematic sound could easily be turned into a Bond score.
