Bernard & Edith – WURDS

grets

There is no greater pleasure for someone like me, than to see a Mancunian act like Bernard & Edith find themselves in the position of beginning 2015 signed to Bella Union, deservedly about to find bigger audience. I distinctly remember the first time I met vocalist Greta ‘Edith’ Carroll down at the SWAYS Bunker, her warm personality left a real impression, shining brightly in a room full of chattering people… and together with her talented partner, a/v artist Nick ‘Bernard’ Delap, they have created a musical project unlike any other.

This is pop music with a uniquely northern imprint, defined by Greta’s jazz influenced vocal, unconventional and darkly delicious. Nick’s beautifully experimental soundscapes, produced with field recordings and basic instrumentation, add texture and mystery. It’s an artistic marriage made in well… Whalley Range. I’ve done my little bit in supporting Bernard & Edith along the way, having promoted them back in 2013, and written about them here on numerous occasions… so it feels fitting today to support and celebrate the official launch of WURDS at The Eagle Inn, Salford tonight. 8pm

Elle Mary & The Bad Men – Ocean

1

It was always my intention to give Tru Luv a distinctly more independent voice… with a clear focus on self-discovery, rather than acting as a mouthpiece for PR companies. In trying to document our personal relationships with music, and by having no commercial agenda; we’re hopefully becoming a trusted destination for new artists.

Elin Rossiter aka Elle Mary was one of my first Tru ‘loves’, and it’s been a pleasure to watch her musical progression these past few months. Elle was never going to find herself surrounded by hype, instead her music would slowly seep into into people’s consciousness… forming a real and lasting connection with her fans. Having previously released the undeniably beautiful Angels, follow-up single Ocean only reinforces my belief that Elle Mary is one of Manchester’s most talented individuals. With repeated listens, the subtle nuances of Elle’s voice become apparent, each word carrying an emotional strength that belies her age. The echoing percussion and shimmering chords provided by The Bad Men, add a slow burning tension, swirling in conflict. In letting us hear her unguarded thoughts, Elle Mary offers hope when there is none… and for that I am very grateful.

Elle Mary & The Bad Men play The Eagle Inn tonight. Tickets here.
Limited Edition CD/Poster copies of Ocean/Angels will be available to purchase.

Gorgeous Bully – Misery Loves Company

bully

For some reason Manchester based Gorgeous Bully have never quite connected with me. It’s hard to explain why, I mean, I’ve listened to and enjoyed their music, but it’s just never set my heart on fire, or made me press repeat until my finger bleeds…until now that is.

Taken from ‘Smiling, Laughing’ a new collection of songs available via bandcamp, Misery Loves Company has changed everything… a breakthrough moment that will make me go back and discover what I’ve clearly been missing. Thomas Crang’s vocals hazily wandering through swoonsome guitar melodies, this is glorious pop music hidden underneath the disguise of lo-fi self-loathing. What’s not to love?

Coasst – I Guess U Lied

0001900863_10

Just when you are beginning to think the Manchester talent pool is close to filling up, another name emerges and blows everyone out of the water. With a sound reminiscent of King Krule… and perhaps even GREAT WAVES at their most melancholy, Shea Hickling aka Coasst is about to announce himself as a serious contender.

I Guess U Lied is driven by a haunting, singular sound.. his world weary voice radiating above a lonesome electric guitar and some sparse drum beats… before breaking out into something more funked up. Clearly still experimenting and by no means representative of his future, it’s hard not to get excited by this understated and dreamwoven noise.

Coasst plays Night & Day this Thursday evening. Doors 8pm. Might be a good idea to go…

Elizabeth Vince – I Was All I Was

vince

Manchester’s Elizabeth Vince first came to my attention as a member of Laekyn, an electronica outfit that dealt in downbeat digitalism. Vince’s ethereal and lovelorn vocal work stood out… so news that she would be releasing a debut solo EP left me intrigued.

Our Loving Cage is certainly a rich canvas of ambience and glacial beats, it’s defining moment I Was All I Was is a beautiful composition of shimmering synths and industrial glitch. Vince’s tender and fragile voice finding strength towards its climax.

The Underground Youth – Naked

underground

I can’t believe it’s been over a year since the (now sold out) vinyl release of The Underground Youth’s last LP ‘The Perfect Enemy For God’ – a lost Manchester classic that seemingly went under the radar of the majority of music journalists. If only someone at *insert name of influential website* would delve into their now impressive back catalogue of 6 albums and one EP, they might discover a band that has matured into something very special indeed. Comprising of husband and wife duo Craig and Olya Dyer, and guitarist Thomas Josef E, The Underground Youth have established themselves within the DIY psyche scene but really deserve a wider audience. Could Naked, taken from forthcoming EP ‘Beautiful & Damned’ (Fuzz Club Records) be the track to do it? Wrapped in post-punk influences from the obvious (Jesus and Mary Chain) to hinting at more modern reference points (The XX) it’s a spellbinding track that shows restraint towards sound… a stoned, lazy beauty, that remains effortlessly cool throughout.

Pre-Order ‘Beautiful & Damned’ by The Underground Youth here. Release date 25/10/2014
